Forging a new path toward the future, the 2021 Jeep® Wrangler 4xe wins the Hybrid Technology Solution of the Year at the AutoTech Breakthrough Awards. This victory is another proud moment for the Jeep Brand as it pursues excellence and uncompromised adventure.

Climb over tough obstacles and go an electrifying 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. A plug-in hybrid turbocharged engine gives the Wrangler 4xe an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of instant torque for heart-pounding performance off-road and on-road.

Whether you want to take off-road adventure to new places or simply get around town on all-electric power, the Wrangler 4xe is ready with an EPA estimated 49 MPGe rating. E-Selec driving modes that utilize Power Routing enable you to optimize performance while eliminating range anxiety.

Every Wrangler 4xe is delivered with a Level I (120V) charging system that plugs into a typical household outlet. You can get an even faster charge with an available safe, simple-to-use Level II (240V) charger like the Mopar® Branded TurboDX Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger. You can utilize Qmerit, our approved partner, for installation. The Level II charger can fully charge the Wrangler 4xe battery in approximately 2 hours versus 12 hours.

When the battery has more than a 1% charge, it can run in Electric Mode. This allows for nearly zero tailpipe emissions up to highway speeds. The vehicle can run in this mode for up to 21 miles.

The default mode, Hybrid, combines torque from both the 2.0L turbocharged engine and the electric motors. This combination provides maximum horsepower, instant torque and the best acceleration. Electric power is consumed first.

eSave Mode prioritizes the 2.0L engine. This saves the battery charge for later use. When power demand is low, the engine shuts off. It can also be reconfigured to increase the battery charge as well.

This feature allows the battery to be charged when decelerating and braking. The Max Regeneration feature remaps the accelerator pedal to command more aggressive regen at low pedal positions. It allows you to slow the vehicle down without the brake pedal, but a complete stop always requires the brake pedal. It also stays selected until you turn it off.

As mentioned above, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe maintains the same overall appearance as the ever-popular Wranglers of past years. There are three trim levels, the Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude, and each one is exclusively available in a 4-door configuration with space for 5 passengers. The exterior bears an "electric blue" 4xe badge to indicate its hybrid status, and the Rubicon trim also features a blue-outlined hood decal. Inside, the 4xe features the Uconnect 4 infotainment system with smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and leather interior is also available on all three trim levels. Another main difference is that the Rubicon trim features blue contrast stitching and blue interior accents, and on all models, the rear seat can be lifted up to access the battery pack that's housed below.

What is the Wrangler 4xe's Hybrid Powertrain?

The real star of the show is the Wrangler 4xe's innovative hybrid technology that helps it utilize both gas and electric power. Under the hood, you'll find a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. This gas-powered system is joined by two electric motors that are connected to a 96-cell, 400-volt battery pack that's stored beneath the rear seats. The battery pack has its own cooling components to ensure an optimum temperature for best performance, and all its wiring is waterproof-sealed to keep it safe in all weather conditions. All in all, this system brings a hefty 375 horsepower to the Wrangler 4xe, and it can also travel for up to 25 miles using only electric power when the battery is fully charged. What's more, the electric power makes the torque more readily available to the 4xe, so driving feels more agile and responsive than ever before.

What is it Like to Drive the Jeep Wrangler 4xe?

As mentioned above, the Wrangler 4xe is has a quick and responsive feel, and it also has excellent off-road prowess, especially with the Rubicon trim. The Rubicon is Jeep Trail Rated to withstand rugged conditions, including up to 30 inches of water fording. All Wrangler 4xe's also feature three drive modes, Hybrid, Electric, and E-save. Hybrid mode will draw power equally from the gas tank and the battery, to make your fuel last as long as possible. As the name would suggest, Electric mode solely relies on the battery pack, offering up to 25 miles of emission-free range. Lastly, eSave mode will utilize the gas-powered engine first, and then automatically switch over to electric when fuel runs low. To recharge the Wrangler 4xe, simply plug the charging cable into the front charging ports, and then monitor the battery levels via the LED indicators on the dashboard, or next to the port itself. With the new Level II Jeep Charging Cable, the Wrangler 4xe can achieve a full charge from empty in just two hours, and let you get back on the road with less wait time.
