2022 Wagoneer vs Ford Expedition

Shopping for a new car is not always easy. If you're searching for a new three-row SUV, you've probably seen just how many options there are to choose from! With every model claiming to be the best of the best, it can be easy to lose track of exactly what each one really has to offer. Today, we'll be taking a closer look at both the 2022 Wagoneer, and the 2021 Ford Expedition to see how they compare. The Wagoneer is a new take on 1963's classic SUV. This version is fully redesigned with a stunning design and an outstanding towing capacity. The Ford Expedition is Ford's largest SUV, and offers five trim levels for 2021. To learn more about the features and capabilities of the Wagoneer and the Expedition, and to ultimately decide which one you'd rather drive home, continue reading down below!

2022 Wagoneer Power & Handling

The 2022 Wagoneer has an innovative powertrain featuring a 5.7-liter V8 engine paired with an eTorque mild-hybrid system. It works to conserve energy by pulling power from a 48-volt battery pack in conjunction with the V8 gas engine, and using cylinder deactivation to vary the engine displacement. The Wagoneer can produce up to 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque, and when properly equipped, boasts a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 10,000 pounds! 4-wheel drive is available on both of the Wagoneer's two trim levels, and drivers have the choice of three robust 4X4 systems, the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II. The Wagoneer can handle off-road conditions including up to 24 inches of water fording thanks to its 10-inch maximum ground clearance provided by the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System.

2021 Ford Expedition Power & Handling

All five of the 2021 Ford Expedition's trim levels rely on just one powertrain option, which consists of a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Expedition's output is rated at 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, except for the highest trim level, the Platinum. This model is configured to get a slight boost, coming in at 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Despite the extra power, though, the Expedition's maximum towing capacity can't quite keep up with the Wagoneer, totaling 9,300 pounds when properly equipped. Rear-wheel drive comes standard on all trim levels, and 4-wheel drive is an available option for adding extra traction in slippery conditions. Though the Expedition is generally quite responsive, its larger size makes it naturally a bit slow, and can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces.

2022 Wagoneer Features & Design

The 2022 Wagoneer has a modern and sleek design both inside and out, with standard features like a hands-free power liftgate, and Nappa leather interior. The Wagoneer comes with the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot. It also has heated and ventilated front seats with power lumbar support, and additional screens available for the front passenger, and the rear seats. The Wagoneer's safety package is quite robust, and includes standard features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic emergency braking. Additional advanced features like a 360-degree camera are also available for the upper trim level.

2021 Ford Expedition Features & Design

As mentioned above, the Expedition is the largest SUV produced by Ford. This offers the benefit of more interior space, especially in the third row, but also creates some issues with driver visibility due to its size. Strangely, the first trim level in the lineup only seats up to five passengers while the other four trims seat eight. This trim, the XL, was just added for the 2021 model year but does tend to stand out for being so much smaller than the rest of the lineup. In terms of tech, the Expedition comes with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, though the connection is not wireless like you'll find on the Wagoneer. It also has tri-zone climate control, available leather interior, and a hands-free power liftgate.

Conclusion:

If you find yourself torn between these two three-row SUVs, we feel that the strongest option is clear. The Ford Expedition just can't measure up to the 2022 Wagoneer! The Wagoneer has strength and capability, as well as high-tech features, and sleek design themes that make it a well-rounded and accommodating SUV overall.
