First-ever Grand Cherokee 4xe

at Shively Motors of Shippensburg

The all-new 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe is the first Grand Cherokee to offer a plug-in hybrid model. The 4xe PHEV technology enhances the fun, freedom, and adventure that Jeep is known for while providing unprecedented performance and environmental friendliness. Drivers can tailor their hybrid powertrain to suit each trip, from daily commuting in pure-electric mode to exploring nature off-road in near silence. The Grand Cherokee 4xe is available in the Grand Cherokee Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve models.

Grand Cherokee 4xe Propulsion System

The 4xe propulsion system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine, and TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission for maximum efficiency and capability. Overall, the 4xe system delivers 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque with an estimated 25 miles of all-electric range, returns an estimated 57 MPGe, and has an estimated total capacity of more than 440 miles. In addition, the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe is ready for whatever adventure you throw at it with the Quadra Trac II 4x4 system with a two-speed transfer case that delivers a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio and a 47.4:1 crawl ratio.

Efficiency of the 4xe PHEV Technology

Jeep replaced the traditional alternator with a high-voltage, liquid-cooled motor-generator. This unit is connected to the engine crankshaft pulley via a belt which spins the engine for nearly seamless, fuel-saving, start-stop operation and generates electricity for the battery pack. In addition, a larger high-voltage motor-generator replaces the conventional torque converter in the transmission.

Jeep's PHEV Transmission

Two clutches manage power and torque from the e-motor and engine. One clutch is mounted between the engine and the motor. This clutch is engaged when the system is in electric-only mode, and the clutch will open so there is no mechanical linkage between the engine and the e-motor. The system combines torque from the 2.0-liter engine and the e-motor flow through the automatic transmission when the clutch is closed. The second clutch is mounted behind the e-motor manages engagement with the transmission to improve drivability and efficiency.

Grand Cherokee 4xe E Selec Modes

With E Selec modes, drivers can tailor the hybrid powertrain to best suit each trip, whether commuting, off-roading, or long-distance travel. This system works by the driver selecting the desired powertrain mode via buttons mounted on the instrument panel. There are three models to choose from Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. When the Grand Cherokee 4xe is placed in the Hybrid model, the system combines torque from the electric motor and gas engine to deliver the best fuel efficiency and performance. The Electric model allows the vehicle to operate on zero-emission electric power. If the driver switched to eSave mode, the system would prioritize the engine, saving the battery charge for later use. Regardless of the mode selected, the Grand Cherokee 4xe operates as a hybrid once the battery nears its minimum state of charge.

2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe Eco Coaching Pages

The Grand Cherokee 4xe offers Eco Coaching Pages. These pages allow drivers to monitor power flow and see the impact of regenerative braking, schedule charging times to take advantage of lower electric rates, and view their driving history with electric and gasoline usage details. This information is displayed on either the driver information display or the central touchscreen in the center console.
